FOR MY BEST FRIEND

How nice to sit with you
over a cup of coffee
and not have to say anything.

How good that you
do not try to entertain me
or pass the quiet time
by a lot of idle chatter.

How restful that
you do not care
what the neighbors are doing
nor would you tell me
if they did hold your interest briefly.

Even when I get annoyed with you
you never hold a grudge
but only look
to our resumed friendship
waiting patiently for me
to make a move
to show I'm feeling better.

And I appreciate
your lack of criticism
and your apparent forgetfulness
when I have forgotten
to show you my love.

And I too will try
to be more patient
when you prefer to
dig in the flowers
or chase a squirrel
or bark at the neighbor's cat!

  3. The last paragraph sounds much like one of my 'bad martini nights'.

ps: It's ok to be silly, I'm sure you'll see some silly comments from me (especially after a glass of vino or two)

  5. As a representative of the neighbors cat I would suggest a little less patience in that catagory. The whole squirrel chasing thing I can agree with and I never understood the whole issue with digging in the floweres, I do it all of the time. There is one point that was not mentioned and I am reluctant to bring it up but it must be brought to air.

  10. Margie, Hi, I enjoyed the mental imagery created by your poem and the ironic twist at the end. As now I find myself in a new home, I am hoping to attract friends much like your squirrel chasing pal - except human. :^) Sounds like you've got a great friend there. Have a super weekend!
