A thousand faces pass me on the street
but none imparts the radiance of your smile
I mingle with acquaintances and meet
no one who dispels my loneliness, the while
familiar roads, familiar times I thread ...
Your absence makes both way and hour seem new
and scarce I know the path my feet have led
or what I've done or what I want to do ...
How empty is the heart with one removed
how futile is the striving to replace
a comrade honored and as greatly loved!
How lasting is the vision of a face!
I pass a thousand faces - none will do
Each one serves to say it is not you ...
As I read this, the face of a dear friend came into my mind. In a few weeks she will have been gone a year and yet it doesn't seem that long ago that she was laughing and smiling. She will be with me forever.
ReplyDeleteBonnie,
DeleteI hope the memory of your friend shall always be a blessing.
Dear friends are such a treasure and it's so hard to lose them.
I am sorry for your loss.
Hugs
Hi Margie! Who are you missing today? I pray that you will have some peace in thinking about all the good things and experiences you had with this person.
ReplyDeleteBless you in your honest emotions, and sharing them in your poetry. That can't be easy for you...
Ceil
Hi Ceil
DeleteI am missing a good friend that passed away a short time ago.
Her beautiful memory i shall always keep in my heart.
Thank you for the kind words on my poetry.
Oh wow this is lovely. Just yesterday and this morning - I've been going through correspondence between my dad and I before he passed away - we had lost my mom (his wife) and to keep him having something to do through those lonely days afterwards we started writing each other - sometimes three letters a day - so he would have something in his mail box. He lived in Arizona, I in California. He has been so much with me these last few days and this poem really "speaks" to me.
ReplyDeleteSandy,
DeleteThanks so much for the kind words.
I think it must have been a wonderful experience to share those letters with your day after he lost his wife and those letters now are something to cherish.
I am sorry for the loss of your dad.

Loss can be so hard, I think time, while not absolute, is our best hope... Thank you for such a beautiful and moving poem.
ReplyDeleteLisa,
DeleteLoss is never easy, time does help.
My loss is very recent and in time I know the pain will be lessened.
The wonderful memories make it easier to bear.
Your lovely comment is much appreciated, thank you so much.
I am sorry for your loss...this made me think of my mom and dad.
ReplyDeleteThank you, ayala.

ReplyDeletegoatman
DeleteThe memories are a treasure.
Thanks for the visit, hope all is good with you.
sad. its hard when we lose one that we really care for...seeing them everywhere and no where...when everyone is a reminder that they are not them...hard stuff.....
ReplyDeleteBrian,
DeleteI so agree with all you shared, hard stuff, indeed.
But we have to go and do our best without them.
I so believe the loved ones we have lost want us to be happy.
Loss is always difficult. I am 57 now...yet both my parents died over 30 years ago, within one year of each other (my mother in 1983 and my father in 1984). Very touching, and thank you so much for sharing your talent and feelings, dear Margie.
ReplyDeleteLinda,
DeleteIt must have been very difficult to lose your parents that way, so close in time.
Thanks so much for the kind words.
They mean a lot to me.
So sad and so very true, Margie. I like the cadence of the poem. I read it aloud.
ReplyDeleteHi Barb,
DeleteI like that you read the poem aloud.
Thanks for the thoughtful comment.
It is appreciated.
This is beautiful, Margie. It gave me goose bumps. Made me think of my father and my brother who have left this world. I see their faces in the crowds, but it's never them.
ReplyDeleteMartha,
DeleteMany thanks on the kind words.
I think most of us that lost loved ones 'look for their faces in the crowds'
Sorry for the loss of your brother and dad.
Losing someone we cherish, it is hard...BUT...it is also a way to understand how happy you were to have found that very person, to mean so much to you, to bring a different kind of smile into your existence...Now, this is the whole point!
ReplyDeleteHi Gabriela,
DeleteYes, I know what you mean and thank you for sharing.
I am smiling now as I remember my dear friend.
Hi Margie - it's such a difficult time, even though people say time does heal and it does - the loss and that emotion is still there ... til the day we go.
ReplyDeleteRemembrance is good too - as Gabriella says ... but this is a lovely expressive poem ... with many happy thoughts to you of times gone, but for the happy ones ... cheers Hilary
Hi Hilary,
DeleteYour kind words are much appreciated.

Margie,
ReplyDeleteSuch a realistic experience, which happens to most of us, at a time when consummed by the loss of a dear one. Wishing to see them emerge from a sea of faces...I thought in that way, after my mother died. When I returned back to visit the city where she had lived, I wished so much to find her in my pathway.
You have a gift Margie, of holding thoughts about such moments in life.
Best wishes, Eileen xx
Eileen,

True words showing true feelings for a lost comrade.
ReplyDeleteA picture can replace a thousand words; a thousand faces cannot mean to us what the one specific face meant.

And thank you for the kind words.
