UNDERSTANDING

When I see a red bird
Perched upon a tree
In a bleak December
Singing lustily
I won't say it's happy
Though its song seems so
For I sing, too, on dark days
And I ought to know ...
Know when words ring gaily out
To a listening throng
There may be a sad note
Threading through that song
Or a heart be broken
Though a laugh is heard
So it is with tenderness
I salute the bird.

  4. Ah, beautiful. I think we can all relate to this, when our face is smiling, but our eyes are not. You have a way with words and convey your beautiful thoughts very well.

  9. This is a lovely reminder that we can sing and hum and release energy even when we are feeling down. That isn't the same thing as pretending, it is a way to hold onto the good while dealing with the bad.

  11. Margie, most of us have learned to sing on dark days but most of us do not have your gift of expressing ourselves in such a lovely way as you have, another great poem my friend.......:-) Hugs

  17. Hello Margie,
    Very nicely written.
I love seeing cardinals perched on the tree by the feeder in the winter. They look so bright next to the sparkling white snow.
    I love the photo too.
    Have a great day,
    Lydia
