For You ~ Papa ~

I thought I heard your footsteps
running towards me
disturbing the stones
but when I opened my eyes
I saw it was only the waves
pulling and swirling like hands ...

I thought I felt your smile
warm and loving upon my face
but when I opened my eyes
I saw it was only the sun
beaming at me across the water ...

I thought I heard you
whisper my name
but when I opened my eyes
I realized it was only the wind
playing in my hair ...

I thought I felt you
softly kiss my cheek
but when I opened my eyes
I saw it was only a leaf
caressing me with gentle strokes ...

And then I felt your love
in and all around me
powerful yet gentle like the waves
warm and shining like the sun
soft yet strong like the wind
tender and alive like the leaves
and I didn't even have
to open my eyes
I knew you were there ....

My papa (grandpa) was one of the kindest people
I have ever known.
He died much too young at the age of sixty
of a sudden heart attack.
I was only eight years of age when he left me.
I have such wonderful memories of my dear papa.
He was such a gentle and good man ...

  1. This is so beautiful and tenderly sweet, dear Margie.
Sadly I know these feelings very well. My pap-pa (grandpa) was my best friend. He also passed away in his 60's. I've never gotten over his death and I still miss his presence in my life.

    1. Jan,
      You are so kind.
I so appreciate the lovely comment, thanks dear lady.

So, your pap-pa was your best friend, then I know how much you must miss him.
Rose said something to me today that touched my heart so much, she said,"Nanny I love you, you my friend"
So, think I am going to be 'her best friend"
Being a grandparent is such a blessing.
My papa was a blessing to me

      Hugs
      xoxo

  2. Can we ask for anything more than to be remembered as you have remembered your papa? I especially like that you've used Nature as an expression of him.

    1. Brian,
All I have to do is look at the beauty in nature and I see my dear papa.
He was an avid outdoors man and loved nature and shared that love with me.
We would walk for hours in the woods together and he would tell me about all the tress and birds.
      Smiles

  5. When warm weather returns, I will go outside on my sunny deck, close my eyes, and wait for loving feelings, too.
    Beautiful poem about your Papa.

  6. Grandparents have a unique love for their grandchildren and vice versa. When my husband died in October, my granddaughter was the most upset of us all. He was her hero and her best cheerleader. Beautiful words you've written.
